MOST BLESSED

Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. Luke 1:38

It is true, as the angel said, that Mary was “highly favored” and “blessed among women” to be given the honor of bearing the Savior himself in her womb. But it is also true that this privilege brought with it many, many difficulties.

For Jesus’ sake, Mary would suffer tension with her fiancé Joseph and shame in her community; she would have to travel to Bethlehem to be taxed; she would have to flee to Egypt…and eventually she would see her own son tortured to death. Almost every prophecy that concerned Jesus would affect her.

But what a noble, faithful response she makes to this announcement! “Let it be to me according to your word.” Whatever the Lord wants for me, let it come to me. If my suffering will fulfill the Lord’s good pleasure, then let it be so.

Believer, the only place of honor in the kingdom of God is the place of service. The only way to be useful is to be submitted entirely to the Lord. There is no place of privilege in the kingdom of heaven that is not also a place of special suffering.

Have you submitted your life completely to God? Can you say that whatever the Lord wills for you is welcome, if it means that his name will be glorified? Do you see yourself as a “handmaid”, a servant of the Lord? If so, then you are truly blessed among humans. May it truly be unto you according to the word of the Lord.

Prayer: Lord, let all your word for my life be done.
